We must work with other municipalities to lobby Provincial and Federal governments to change the criminal code and sentencing mandates to target prolific offenders.
Persons that demonstrate severe Mental Health and/or Substance Abuse problems with repeated contact by protective services and health services at some point need to be incarcenated to a facility where they can get better. Currently society has to wait for the person who is sick to want the help they need.
We must target bad behavior in public spaces. The Party is Over...everyone has the right to enjoy public spaces and be able to feel safe.
City staff's (Management) job is to look after the needs of the corporation. City Council's job is the balance the needs/wants of management with the needs/wants and ability to pay by the taxpayers. This council rarely pushed backed on City Staff initiatives and budget asks.
Staff wages in 2021 was $26,898,459 vs $24,026,244 from 2018 when the previous council finished their term...that is an increase of $2,872,215 dollar per year (plus cost of living increases).
Ironman is a wonderful event and did bring some excitement and people for it's return this past August; however $650,000 per year for 1,500 athletes is more than we can afford. Especially when events such as the Gran Fondo Penticton had 3,000 athletes and only cost the City $40,000. Dragon Boat Festival attracts over 2,000 athletes and typically only receives $10,000 from the City. We should have used a portion of the money allocated for Ironman to create/foster some new events/sport tourism instead of trying to relieve the nostalgia of the past.
We need diverse housing options to help with affordability and attracting key staff to help our economy and community grow. We need to continue to foster investor confidence and leverage that for smart growth and infrastructure improvements (such as housing and amenities - new and/or improving existing)
We need to strive to be recognized again as one of the top 5 most entrepreneurial cities in Canada. More people are working remotely, so why not have them be based here in Penticton raising their families and being part of our community.
We are the festival and event capital which helps to bolster community pride, volunteerism, and contributes to our economic growth both during the event but also with the exposure to our area that spurs potential new investment (return visit, purchase property, buy a business). We need to foster and development more events and festivals throughout the year, and continue to invest in arts and culture.
I like the concept of a protected bike lane and promoting cycling as Penticton is a very walkable and cycling friendly community.
The City should have the used the cycling grant money to resurface the scenic KVR trail from Penticton to Summerland and along the channel Parkway. This would have aligned with the valley wide "Rails to Trails" initiative, created a destination for cycling enthusiasts, provided a safe environment for people to get comfortable riding, and would have been an excellent partnership opportunity with the Penticton Indian Band.
While on council I helped to champion the creation of our area as a cycling precinct, supported the BMX relocation, building a pump track, adding Three Blind Mice trail network to the Cities parks inventory.
While I don't like the current bike lane plans...it doesn't make sense to remove them, but rather try to beautify the current "eyesore" and invest in more initiatives to make people feel safe riding and hopefully start cycling more.
